Pirate Week: Crossbones Island

Happy Pirate’s Day!  We dare not celebrate this great holiday in just one day.  How about the whole week!?  We’ll be kicking things off with a great hands-on project.

Island Main
Crossbones Island made from salt dough

My 3-year old helped me put together this salt dough island.  And it was super easy to make.  Here’s what you need:

Island Ingredients

Combine all the ingredients but the water into a bowl.  Slowly add the water until your mixture becomes a doughy consistency.

Island Mix

You’ll know when to stop adding water when you’re able to mold the mix into a ball like this:

Next, lay some foil on a cookie sheet.  Mold your dough into whatever shape you’d like.

Island Prep
Don’t forget to add lots of texture and mold some dough into a treasure chest.

Bake it in a 350°F oven for 20 to 25 minutes.  The thicker your island, the longer it will take to bake and dry out.  So keep a close eye on it.

While your island bakes and cools, try making some trees out of leaves, tape and toothpicks.

Finally use poster paints to decorate your island.

Remember to place your treasure chest somewhere on the island, like a dark and secluded cave.

Island Treasure

Looks like the Black Pearl has completed this quest.  Visit us again later this week for our second Pirate Week project.

Enjoy Mateys!
