Wagon Racers

Ever wondered if Pioneers used their wagons for racing?  Well, probably not.  But let’s use up some spools and our imagination to put on a Prairie schooner race.

Wagon Racers Main

Supplies you’ll need:

  • Empty spools
  • Card stock
  • Tape
  • Straws, 2” long pieces
  • Pen
  • Scissors
  • Hole punch

Steps:

  1. Prepare the wagon covers by cutting cardstock into 2” x 3 ½” rectangles.  Fold rectangles in half and punch a hole about ¼” from the edge.  Wagon Racers Covers  If you want, draw a design for your cover.
  2. The spools used for this project are from a craft store and have smaller holes than normal spools.  You won’t have to do this step if your straw can freely move inside the spool.  Cut your straw in half lengthwise and roll it tightly.  Wagon Racers Straw
  3. Feed the straw through the spool and place one side of the wagon cover on top of the spool.  Cut short slits on the straws end and flatten it against the cardboard.  Use tape to secure the straw onto the cardboard.  Wagon Racers Side1
  4. Turn it over and repeat the process.  You may need to trim your straw a little before making the slits.  Wagon Racers Side 2
  5. You can add horses too.  Draw them on some card stock, cut out,  and tape to the inside of the wagon cover.  Wagon Racers Horses

Let the racing begin.  3, 2, 1…go!
