Spinning Robot Toy

Let’s turn our Robot Paper Craft into a fun energy toy!

Spinning Robot Toy

Supplies you’ll need:

  • Robot Paper Craft
  • Toilet tissue tube
  • Construction paper – red, white, & green
  • Pipe cleaner, black
  • Card stock – black or white
  • Paperclips, 2″
  • Rubber band, 3”
  • Washer
  • Tape
  • Glue
  • Hole Punch
  • Scissors and/or craft knife

Steps:

  1. Print the Robot Paper Craft on card stock and cut it out.  Make the folds as noted on the printout.  Cut an “X” instead of all 4 slits on the bottom.
  2. Slide a rubber band halfway through one paperclip.  Thread the rubber band into the “X” starting from the non-printed side.  Secure the paperclip onto the cardstock with tape.  This is what you should have before closing up the robot head.  Spinning Robot Head  Finish putting the robot head together.
  3. Cut the red and white construction paper into 2” x 6” strips.  Glue or tape them around the toilet tissue tube.
  4. Create buttons by punching out one circle each of green and red.  Glue the circles onto the tube so they look like this: Spinning Robot Buttons
  5. Punch a hole in the middle of the white section of the tube and make another hole on the opposite side of the tube.  Feed the pipe cleaner into the holes to make robot arms.  To get the arms to curl, wrap the pipe cleaner around a pencil.
  6. Cut two 2 ½” circles.  These will keep the washer and bottom paper clip in place.
  7. Assemble the robot by feeding the rubber band through the washer then a circle from step 6.  Next, feed the rubber band through the tube (white side first), then the other circle.  Slide the rubber band halfway through a paperclip and you’re done!

To see some kinetic energy in action, start turning your robot head.  It takes quite a number of turns until you begin to feel any resistance.  Once you do, make a few more turns and let it spin! Cool, huh?!
